The cost of diabetes to the NHS is over £1 million every hour which equates to £19,000 spent every minute. An estimated £10 billion is spent treating diabetes and its related complications each year. By 2025 diabetes prevalence is expected to rise to 4 million. (source: www.diabetes.org.uk)
Incidence of Type 2 in particular has been on the increase at a particularly high rate and is now one of the world’s most common long term health conditions. Factors that appear to play a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes are genetics, obesity and lack of appropriate diet and physical activity. Type 2 diabetes occurs most often in adults over the age of 40 and accounts for up to 90% of all diabetes cases.
