Take control with Be 1® capsule cap

Do you have a left colostomy, since more than a month and are your stools moldy or pasty? Then Be 1® could be a solution for you, but to be sure, please talk to your treating health care professional.

If the diameter of your colostomy is less than Ø 30 mm we recommend to choose the Be 1® capsule cap of Ø 55 mm that fits on the base plate Flexima® 3S Be 1® cut-to-fit 55 mm. Note that also the Flexima® 3S flat standard base plates of a 55 mm diameter are compatible with the Be 1®. They are available in cut-to-fit 15-40 mm and pre-cut 35 mm, 40mm.

If the diameter of your colostomy is between Ø 30 mm and 40 mm we recommend to choose the Be 1® capsule cap of Ø 65 mm that fits on the base plate Flexima® 3S Be 1® cut-to-fit 65 mm. Note that also the Flexima® 3S flat standard base plates of a 65 mm diameter are compatible with the Be 1®. They are available in cut-to-fit 15-50 mm and pre-cut 45 mm.

It is recommended to change your Be 1® capsule after stool evacuation, but finally it is up to you to decide when to change it. We recommend to wear a colostomy pouch (e.g. Flexima® 3S closed) during the night. However the base plate can stay on place for up to 3 days.

Be 1® is suitable for patients with stools that have a solid to pasty consistency. The use of Be 1® with liquid stools is contraindicated. We recommend to use drainable pouches such as Flexima® 3S Roll Up.

Yes, the Be 1® capsule has been designed to open spontaneously as soon as the pressure of stools is too high and the capsule cap has not been open manually before. Regarding gases, the capsule gets bulged and you have simply to evacuate the gas by pressing on the degassing button.

The bulging of the capsule cap indicates that either gases or stools have to be evacuated. In this case find a discreet place and simply press the degassing button. If the capsule cap continuous to be bulged, this means that stools have to be evacuated.

If you miss to initiate the degassing process and the pressure becomes too important, the capsule cap is designed to open spontaneously, so as to restore the intestinal pressure.

Yes, you could slightly unclip the cap to degas but for more safety we recommend to use the degassing button if the capsule is curved. Also please keep in mind that there is an integrated filter which allows a continuous passive degassing while the capsule is closed.

When using the degassing button, odors are not filtered. Therefore we recommend to look for a discreet place, away from people, to carry out the degassing.

It's normal. If the intestinal pressure is too important, the cap of Be 1® is designed to open by itself for safety reasons.

The foam helps to better direct the stool into the pouch during the evacuation process and so facilitate the cleaning of the support when changing the capsule.

This is not the purpose for which the product is designed for. Be 1® integrated collection pouch is designed to collect the stool whenever you decide to open the cap to evacuate stools or when it opens by itself for safety reasons.
The pouch has been chosen for safety features and its ability to stay folded and to unfold when needed. For optimal use, the pouch should be unfolded only when there is stool to be collected and then changed when stool evacuation is complete. If you want to wear a normal pouch from time to time, we recommend you to choose the corresponding Flexima® 3S closed pouch.

If the pouch has been unfolded although there weren’t any stools to evacuate, it may be because of an important amount of gases. To avoid this situation, we recommend to degas frequently with the help of the degassing button. You will not be able to fold the pouch and close the capsule cap again. In any case, we recommend you to change the capsule once it is open and the pouch unfolded.

We recommend to use a colostomy pouch during the night, e.g. a Flexima® 3S colostomy pouch that can be used with the same base plate. The automatic opening system of the Be 1® capsule cap could be compromised depending on your sleeping position, and therefore interfere in its safety mechanism concerning the automatic opening in case of intestinal pressure.

It is important to choose clothes that do not exert pressure on the device and so compromise the correct functioning of Be 1®. You should take care that the device always has the possibility to open spontaneously in case of high intestinal pressure and so avoid abdominal pain. Therefore you should avoid tight clothes such as leggings or belts that would press on the capsule cap.

In addition, note that when the device opens automatically for safety reasons, the cap is released and falls down on the floor if it is not hold by your clothes tucked in your waist. So choose a suitable outfit to avoid this situation.

Yes. This is one of the main advantages of this device. However, the heat of the water can change the adhesive power of the skin protector; therefore you should limit the time in contact with water.

Yes. There isn’t any contraindication for travelling using Be 1®, neither by car, train or by plane. We recommend to take with you also other appliances you are used to, e.g. stoma pouches, to adapt to routine or diet changes that are very common during travelling. (See, also our recommendations on our FAQ page for ostomates under When can I start driving/travelling again?)

Tips for traveling by plane:

It is recommended to travel with a certificate explaining your device, in order to facilitate boarding checks. In addition, choose a place close to the toilets to facilitate the pouch change or degassing during the flight as after the take-off, you may need to use the degassing button of Be 1® to restore the pressure balance.

The integrated pouch corresponds to a maxi closed pouch with the capacity of 615 ml - 635 ml, depending on the diameter of the capsule (respectively 55 or 65 mm).
