Regaining control over my life

Daily life with a colostomy can be particularly restrictive, however the story of Virgil, a French taxi driver, demonstrates that with perseverance, it is possible to live "like everyone else" as a colostomate. Testimonial.

Virgil just turned 55. He is a self-employed taxi driver with many friends, family, and colleagues. He likes traveling, playing sports, and enjoys the small pleasures in his everyday life. His life seems normal as you would not expect him to have a colostomy as a result of colon cancer.

„I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2012, then in 2014 I experienced a peritoneal recurrence. I underwent a surgery that was more complicated than foreseen. After 17 hours in the operating room I came out with an "unexpected" colostomy. When I woke up, the surgeon explained to me that the stoma had not been anticipated and above all, that it would only be temporary.“

While battling cancer, Virgil lived with his colostomy for eight months until his gastrointestinal passage was restored. Returning to "normal" was a relief for Virgil, who admits to having few good memories of this period that was difficult for him both physically and psychologically... last not least due to the bad odors.

Unfortunately, the disease didn’t give him a break… Intestinal adhesions and obstructions accumulated over time and by the end of 2018, the medical team had no alternative but to recommend a new permanent colostomy.

Hard to accept, easier to manage

„Although I had expected it, the news was difficult to accept. I was surrounded by my family as well my healthcare team, especially my ET nurse who supervised me and kept me informed which helped me to make a quick decision.“

– Virgil

As an expert in stoma care, Virgil’s nurse helped him to accept, understand, and even recommended new devices that would make living with a colostomy easier. In January 2019 he discovered Be 1®, a two-piece system composed of a cap to cover the stoma with an integrated pouch folded inside.  Virgil quickly found that Be 1® provides freedom throughout the day.

„Contrary to what I thought after my first experience, I quickly adjusted to my new stoma using the new-generation device. Be 1® solved my problems, there was no more odor or embarrassment, all while keeping my stoma hidden under clothing. I can empty my pouch whenever and wherever I want, without interfering with my personal or professional life. I learned when and what to eat and I try to listen to my body. Managing stoma appliances is much more difficult when you are a taxi driver than working in an office. As a result of Be 1®, I have regained a real feeling of "control".“

Strong in your mind to feel good in your body

Over time, Virgil has gained more experience to overcome his frustrations and embarrassments to live his new life to the fullest.

„Of course, it takes time to adapt. Today, I feel great. I have family that supports me. I have a job that I enjoy. Living life with no limitations, I can still do almost any physical activity and continue to travel the world. Last year I traveled to the United States for three weeks and this summer I went to Egypt, Jordan and Israel!“
